From the Archbishop’s Desk – 13th of August, 2023

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord:

TO ALL PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS WORKING IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS, AND THE LAY FAITHFUL;

  1. SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION: This Holy Day of Obligation which in the Church’s Liturgical Calendar, is celebrated on the 15th August 2023 every year, celebrates one of the four dogmas concerning the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church teaches in this dogma, that the Blessed Virgin Mary, who having been preserved from the stain of original sin and having completed the course of her earthly life, full of graced, was by the power of God assumed into heaven body and soul, since her sinless body could not be allowed to suffer the corruption of the grave. The Assumption of Our Blessed Virgin Mary was declared a dogma by the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII in the year 1950. Let us like Mary strive towards perfection so that we may merit eternal happiness.
  1. POPE’S INTENTION FOR AUGUST 2023: For World Youth Day: We pray the World Youth Day in Lisbon will help young people to live and witness the Gospel in their own lives .…. We pray O Lord.
  1. ARCHBISHOP’S INTENTION FOR AUGUST 2023: For the Aged and Home Bound: We pray for our elderly people and all who are home-bound. May God grant them strength in their old age, strengthen them in their weakness, give them joy in their children and help them to live their old age in joy and peace ……. We pray O Lord.
  1. ON PHOTOGRAPH-TAKING ON THE SANCTUARY: The Sanctuary is a holy place, a sacred space within the Sacred Space that the church building is. We, therefore, expect that it should not be turned to a photo-shoot place, used after every liturgical ceremony, such as weddings, baptism, funeral Masses, etc. If any photographs at all would be taken, they should be done as exceptions and never as the rule, and people must not be allowed to saunter around on the sanctuary on which the altar of sacrifice is located.
