CONTRACEPTION IS INTRINSICALLY EVIL – It is a LIE!
Dear Friends, we shall continue our discussion by considering the number one factor that militates against living responsible parenthood fully, that is CONTRACEPTION/contraceptive mentality!
\”The Church has always taught the intrinsic evil of contraception — that is, of every marital act intentionally rendered unfruitful. This teaching is to be held as definitive and irreformable. Contraception is gravely opposed to marital chastity; it is contrary to the good of the transmission of life (-the procreative aspect of matrimony) and to the reciprocal self-giving of the spouses (the unitive aspect of matrimony); it harms true love and denies the sovereign role of God in the transmission of human life.\”[1]
Contraception named from two Latin words contra (against) and conceptio (to conceive) literally means against conception, is defined as a willful act undertaken before, during or after a conjugal/marital sexual act to render it unfruitful. (cf. HV 14).
It has several methods largely classified into three groups:
- Barrier method such as shields, condom, withdrawal (coitus interruptus) etc.
- Hormonal such as the pills, injections, implants or devices.
- Or surgical as in tubal ligation, removal of the womb or vasectomy – cutting of the spermatic cord of the man.
Basically, they act by preventing the sperm reaching the egg, or by preventing ovulation – the maturing and releasing of the egg of the woman or by making it impossible for the newly conceived baby to develop and grow in the mother’s womb (abortifacients). A new implant for men is being developed to cause low sperm count or make sperms too weak to fertilize the egg.[2]
Contraception is morally wrong, sinful and evil because it violates the procreative good of marriage. It separates the life-giving value from the love giving value of marriage and the act peculiar to it. Its evil nature is just not about the method as some argue, but the intention, the motivation, the attitude and behavior towards the goods of marriage embedded in the contraceptive mentality.
May God save his people from the
slavery of contraceptive mentality! Consider this Advent how God is offering
you this freedom and embrace it! Wishing
you a spirit-filled Advent. Till next week Faithful couples, remain blessed.
